India: Foxconn accused of excluding married women from iPhone assembly jobs in India

Foxconn, a prominent manufacturer of Apple devices, has faced criticism for allegedly excluding married women from assembly jobs at its main Indian smartphone plant, despite company and legal guidelines against marital status discrimination. This practice has sparked concerns about gender equality and fair hiring practices. The Indian federal labor ministry has stressed that employment laws prohibit discrimination based on gender, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities in recruitment.

According to Reuters, sources within Foxconn and its hiring agencies cited reasons such as family responsibilities, potential pregnancy, and higher absenteeism for not hiring married women at the facility. Following these reports, India's Ministry of Labor and Employment has initiated an investigation into Foxconn's practices. The investigation, conducted through the Labor Department of Tamil Nadu state, seeks a comprehensive report to ensure compliance with the Equal Remuneration Act of 1976, which prohibits discrimination in employment.

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision, is a key supplier for Apple, operating its largest Indian facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The ministry's intervention underscores the importance of enforcing anti-discrimination laws and promoting inclusive workplaces.
