While Mitie does not set immigration detention policy, we are fully committed to delivering the highest standards of care with an absolute focus on respect, decency and meeting the needs of those we look after. At Derwentside our Detention Custody Officers (DCOs) are highly trained to care for women with complex needs.

The services we provide are based upon the current best practice for Immigration Removal Centres, in line with Home Office guidance. As is the case for all immigration facilities in the UK, we are subject to regular reviews and inspections by both the Home Office and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons, which often acknowledge the care and compassion demonstrated by our colleagues, often in challenging circumstances.

As the campaign by Women for Refugee Women notes, Mitie was awarded a two-year contract to run Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) on behalf of the Home Office in 2021. However, it was announced on 16 June 2023 that the contract will be transferred to a new provider on 1 September 2023. We have advised Women for Refugee Women of this change.
