Energetix response to the on-site death of a subcontracted worker

Response from Energetix regarding the death of a subcontracted worker on-site in Singapore:

We are extremely saddened to record a workplace fatality at one of our worksites on Sunday, 22 October 2023. This is the first such workplace incident our team has ever recorded in the history of Energetix’s operations.

At this stage we are unable to disclose further details, as the Ministry of Manpower and police investigations are not yet complete. However, we can note that the toolbox meeting on the morning of October 22 neither scheduled nor authorised any rooftop construction work for that day, and that any further work was done without our knowledge or approval. This is a matter of serious concern, as BBG Engineering is an experienced and reliable subcontractor, with a good safety record. Investigations have yet to conclude why the worker team did not follow established procedures on that afternoon.

We have now implemented a safety time-out at all current project sites, while thoroughly reviewing our internal and external subcontractors’ safety management procedures and best practice.

BBG are in touch with the worker’s family, both directly and via a former staff now living in Bangladesh. BBG covered costs and allowance for the worker’s brother-in-law to accompany his body for repatriation and burial. Energetix will participate with BBG to contribute additional support, pending worker’s compensation insurance.

BBG has also passed the family’s contacts to the Migrant Worker’s Centre, who reported in the Straits Times that it would extend interim financial assistance from the Migrant Workers’ Assistance Fund to the worker’s immediate family, as well as offering counselling services to affected fellow workers.
