Hyundai motor workers found dead after asphyxiation in test vehicle, highlighting safety risks for research staff

“Hyundai Motor research workers die from asphyxiation during vehicle testing in Ulsan plant”, 20 November 2024

Three researchers at Hyundai Motor’s Ulsan plant have tragically died from suffocation while conducting a vehicle performance test.

…The bodies were discovered in the driver’s seat, front passenger seat, and rear seat of the GV80 test vehicle. At the time of discovery, all windows and doors of the vehicle were closed…

…Initial investigations suggest that a malfunctioning [ventilation] system may have led to the build-up of exhaust gases in the test chamber, causing the researchers to suffocate.

…The union has pointed out that researchers generally do not to wear protective gear, such as oxygen masks, when entering the lab.

…In response, Hyundai Motor expressed its condolences, saying, “We deeply mourn the loss of the deceased and extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families.” The company added, “We will swiftly identify the cause of the accident and take all necessary actions. We are also committed to putting measures in place to prevent such a tragic incident from occurring again.”
