"Will act as per people’s decision: CM on Teesta-IV Dzongu HEP project", 18 October 2023

Chief Minister PS Golay has said the State government would go by the local people’s decision on whether to go ahead with the proposed 520 Mw Teesta-IV HEP in Dzongu, North Sikkim.

The mega hydel power project proposed by NHPC in Dzongu along the Teesta river falls between the 510 Mw Teesta-V HEP at Dikchu downstream and 12000 Mw Teesta-III HEP at Chungthang upstream. Most of the statutory clearances have been accorded to the project.

However, this project has been facing strong and sustained opposition by local organisations and community who want this last stretch of around 10 km free flowing Teesta river to remain protected.

Concerns over the Dzongu HEP have considerably risen following the collapse of Teesta-III dam at Chungthang...early morning hours after the South Lhonak glacial lake burst.
