Israel/Palestine: Internal opposition to Google/Amazon "Project Nimbus" for allegedly providing tech to Israeli armed forces amid intensified siege and bombardment of Gaza
In November 2023, workers of Google and Amazon continue to organize and protest against "Project Nimbus" deal with Israeli government. Muslim, Arab, and Palestinian workers involved in the protests have reported facing subsequent hate, abuse, and retaliation.
In April 2021, the Israeli Finance Ministry announced the contract for "Project Nimbus", a $1.2 billion cloud computing system jointly built by Google and Amazon. The ministry's statement concluded that “the project is intended to provide the government, the defense establishment and others with an all-encompassing cloud solution.” The controversial and secretive project has faced strong internal opposition in Google and Amazon and has been linked to providing surveillance tech to be used against Palestinian activists and civilians. Google denies that it will be used in military operations or intelligence services.
