Honduras has reopened legal proceedings against five environmentalists defending the Guapinol River against projects such as the mining company Inversiones Los Pinares, Carlos Leonel George, Reynaldo Domínguez, José Adaly Cedillo, Marco Tulio Ramos and Juan López, on charges of unjust deprivation of liberty, unlawful association, robbery and aggravated arson. Juan López had been murdered five days earlier.

The Court of Appeals of La Ceiba, in the Honduran Caribbean, declared with ‘place’ the appeal presented by the Public Prosecutor's Office against the resolution issued on 26 October 2022 by the Court of Letters of Tocoa in favour of the five environmentalists. The decision of the Court of Appeals annuls the previous resolution that had dismissed the charges against the five environmental defenders, so they will now have to face the judicial process again for the four crimes that the Public Prosecutor's Office accuses them of.
