Philippines: Workers accuse Arcya Glass factory of discriminatory dismissals and anti-union practices amid COVID-19 pandemic

Partido Manggagawa

In November 2020, 200 workers at the Arcya Glass bottle manufacturing factory in Calamba, Laguna in the Philippines were dismissed after the company filed for permanent closure. The Arcya Glass Employees Union alleges that Arcya Glass feigned closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic and abused the rights of freedom of association and collective bargaining by dismissing unionised workers and replacing them with non-unionised workers. Workers are calling on Arcya Glass to reinstate them and to initiate negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Arcya Glass to respond to the allegations. It did not.
