Russia: Court charged Volkswagen over $194 mln for exiting the market

"A court in Russia charged almost 17 billion rubles from Volkswagen for exiting the Russian market", 9 July 2024

The arbitration court of the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia decided to collect 16.9 billion rubles (over 194 million dollars) from the structures of the German automobile concern Volkswagen in Russia in favor of the Gorky automobile plant. The reason was the exit of the concern from the Russian market, the local service of Radio Liberty reports.

Volkswagen supplied GAZ with German-made diesel engines for GAZEL Next light-duty trucks and minibuses. In 2021, part of the engines were not delivered, and in 2022, after the start of the war, supplies stopped completely.

GAZ demanded 28 billion 401 million rubles from the German concern. Almost 21 billion of them is the factory's estimated lost profit from unsold cars with German engines, the Interfax agency notes. The Russian factory estimated losses from compensation to distributors for undelivered cars at 5 billion, investments in the production of cars with German engines at 2.5 billion.

Representatives of the German concern did not agree with this assessment.
