S. Korea: Millions of USD weapons deals made with Israel in 2024, marking notable increase during war on Gaza

[Unofficial translation provided by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

“Exclusive: South Korea sold 84 billion won worth of weapons to Israel in 2024”, 30 November 2024

…From January to August 2024, South Korea sold a total of $5,999,942 (approximately 84 billion won) worth of arms to Israel. These figures were recently obtained in secret by the Peace and Disarmament Centre of the civil society group, People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy(PSPD). In 2023, the value of South Korea's arms exports to Israel amounted to $16,200,166 (around 227 billion won).

…While the specific details of the weapons sold remain unclear, it is believed that a substantial portion of the trade consisted of "weapons, firearms, ammunition, and related parts and accessories" (Customs Code HS93), which have been reported previously. These typically include firearms, explosives, guns, mines, ammunition, grenades, swords, spears, missiles, and their components, all primarily intended for land combat.

…The $5,999,942 in arms exports for this year works out to an average of $749,000 per month—approximately four times higher than previously reported figures.

…In response to inquiries regarding the figures obtained by PSPD, the Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Korea Customs Service stated, "Statistics on arms exports to specific countries are confidential, and we cannot confirm them," according to Hankyeore 21.
