S. Korea: Fire at Aricell's Hwaseong plant kills 23; co. is allegedly negotiating with victims illegally

[Unofficial translation from the Business and Human Rights Resource Center]

“Aricell's Alleged Illegal Settlements Cause Pain to Bereaved Families… Families Who Lost Daughters and Wives Demand Proper Negotiations”, 30 July 2024

The families of the victims of the fire at Aricell's Hwaseong plant, which killed 23 people and injured eight others, have demanded that the company "negotiate without inducing illegal settlements." They allege that Aricell is contacting victims individually instead of officially negotiating through legal representatives. The Aricell Catastrophic Disaster Legal Support Group, representing the survivors, has declared these actions illegal.

…”It is illegal for the company's lawyers to approach the bereaved families individually," said Shin Hana, a lawyer at the Legal Aid Center….

...

On 30 July, News1 reported that Aricell answered that they contacted the families of the victims individually because the Aricell Support Group does not represent all families of the victims.
