Tunisia: Ooredoo accused of having political connections with the country's largest political party, tasked with spying on politicians and magistrates, among others; co. denies allegations

In February 2022, Ridha Raddaoui, member of the Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi Defence Committee, revealed in a press conference that the Committee found evidence and files relating to the involvement of different actors, including political parties, private sector and magistrates, in the assassinations of political activists and oppononets Chokri Belaïd and Mohamed Brahmi.

The Committee alleges that it found “doubtful relations” between the general manager of the Qatari telecom operator, Ooredoo in Tunisia, Mansoor Al Khater, and co-founder of Tunisia’s biggest political party Ennahda, Rached Channouchi, among others.

The Committee further claims that a technical team from Ooredoo has been tasked with spying on politicians, senior security officials and magistrates, adding that “the recordings were then given to Ghannouchi during periodic meetings.”

In response, Ooredoo Tunisia issued a press release denouncing and denying the allegations, saying that the company operates in full compliance with data protection legislation and standards in the country. Ooredoo Tunisia has also indicated that the company is currently preparing to file a complaint against the Committee member over the accusations.
