USA: Workplace violations at California farms come to light a year after mass shooting which killed 7 farmworkers; Concord Farms did not respond

A year after two back-to-back shootings occurred at two businesses in California, the US Department of Labor has fined California Terra Garden more than USD126k for workplace violations uncovered in its wake. A second investigation into poor working and living conditions at Concord Farms include allegations of bullying, long working hours, and a lack of amenities including either a kitchen or bathroom for workers.

The businesses came to the attention of law enforcement when seven farmworkers employed with them were murdered, and one shot and injured, in an "extreme case of workplace violence" in January 2023. The day after the shooting, the state governor said workers were living in shipping containers and earning only USD9/hour, prompting a labour investigation.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre contacted Concord Farms to invite them to respond to the allegations; Concord Farms did not respond.
