Zoom plans to add emotion tracking features resulting in NGOs raising concerns relating to human rights

In April 2019, a report from Protocol indicated that Zoom has been planning to launch an emotion recognition software for its products. The plans cover in the report raised concerns about privacy and discrimination-related risks.

In May 2022, more than 25 NGOs issued a joint letter calling on Zoom to scrap its plans to use artificial intelligence to track and analyze human emotions. Among the concerns highlighted by the human rights organizations are the dangers that this technology has for privacy and human rights, highlighting that emotion AI, like facial recognition, is inherently biased mentioning that this feature will discriminate against vulnerable groups.

The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Zoom to respond to this letter. The company did not.
