Japan: Reported joint drone development with Israel

The Network against Japan Arms Trade (NAJAT), has expressed concern regarding reports that the Japanese and Israeli governments have agreed on a project for joint development of drones for military use. NAJAT points to the large number of reports of human rights violations by the Israeli military, including by UN bodies. Some of the reported violations involve the use of drones. Reports indicate that, subsequent to the agreement, three companies have been approached by the Japanese authorities: Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru), NEC, and Mitsubishi Electric.  The Japanese Cabinet weakened restrictions on weapons exports and joint development in 2014, paving the way for Japan’s increasing involvement in the international arms trade.
