Myanmar: Garment worker who filed complaint over denial of medical leave faces retaliation by factory; incl. co. responses
In November 2023, it was reported that workers at Sheng Mei factory were facing a series of violations, including the entire union being dismissed, discrimination, and unfair pressure on workers.
It was also reported that a worker at Sheng Mei factory filed a complaint with the Labour Relations Department after being denied medical leave. After the complaint, he was then frequently relocated around the factory by management and verbally abused in public. The HR manager forced him to sign a statement stating that he won't miss any days of work.
In January 2024, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited LPP S.A ( for its Sinsay brand), Shimamura (for its Closshi brand), New Yorker (for its FBSister brand), Lidl and BESTSELLER to respond. LPP S.A, Shimamura, Lidl and BESTSELLER responded. New Yorker did not. The responses can be found below.
