Rusal's response to allegations of violence against women protesting on behalf of their husbands employed by the company
The Friguia alumina refinery has not been producing alumina since 4 April 2012, when the trade union commenced an illegal strike in violation of the Conakry Labour Court order dated 28 March 2012. As a result of this strike, the management of the refinery was forced to leave Fria due to security reasons...Despite this, RUSAL has continued to supply the population of the city of Fria with electricity and water, at a cost to the Company of approx. 13 million US dollars since the start of the illegal strike...RUSAL has been working in Guinea for the past 10 years...investing actively into the country’s social infrastructure, implementing a number of programmes aimed at raising the standard of living in the region, including a large-scale educational project...Our company regularly publishes social reports prepared in accordance with the Business Guide to the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. We pay special attention to observing health and safety regulations at our facilities as well as the social well being of all our employees. We fully comply with the labour regulations of the countries in which we operate. Moreover, RUSAL contributes to the social development of the regions where we operate supporting universities, schools, hospitals, local farmers, infrastructure construction.
