Sámi lands allegedly under threat as mining expands for the energy transition

Sámi lands are allegedly under threat as transition mineral mining expands. In January, Swedish state-owned mining company LKAB discovered more than 1 million tonnes of rare earth minerals in the city of Kiruna, located in the north of Sweeden. While this finding has prompted celebratory headlines, as these minerals play a crucial role in Europe's energy transition plans, the Sámi community fears the discovery of this new deposit threatens their rights. According to the Sámi community, new mining activities could lead to a cut in their migration routes, key to their traditional reindeer grazing activities.
