Sweden: Five construction workers allegedly employed by Andersson Company subcontractors die in elevator crash & investigation opened into workplace violations; incl. co comment

In December 2023, it was reported that five workers died in a construction elevator crash in Sundbyberg, a Stockholm suburb in Sweden. The workers included migrant workers from Russia, Ukraine, and Afghanistan.

The accident occurred at a construction site of an apartment building. The construction company, Andersson Company, was the main contractor on the project, and the workers were allegedly employed by its subcontractors. The company has issued a statement on its website, linked above.

An investigation into workplace violations causing involuntary homicide has allegedly been opened. All work at the site has since been suspended due to ‘the risk and danger to life and health’, according to the AFP article.

Andersson Company said “…we have no indications of deficiencies in our work with work environment and safety. The ongoing investigations will show whether we could have done something differently to prevent the accident…”
