[video] Moroccan village ‘terrorised’ by security forces
[T]he...Moroccan village of Chlihat has been the scene of violent confrontations between local residents and security forces...when hundreds of residents staged a protest against a...rice mill...owned by...Rivera del Arroz [part of Ebro Foods]...They claim that Rivera del Arroz had reneged on an agreement..., in which the company allegedly promised not to use this...plot of land. Locals had asked the company not to plant any crops in the field next to their village because rice fields are an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, and they...hoped...to use the field to grow their own crops...[V]iolent clashes broke out between local residents and the armed forces the government had sent to work as security guards for the company...[T]he Moroccan Organisation for Human Rights...reported that around 100 people were injured...[and] that...police have forcibly entered villagers’ homes and ransacked local shops...We have tried to contact Rivera del Arroz...to ask for their comment, but we haven’t yet received an answer. [Business & Human Rights Resource Centre invited Ebro Foods to respond to the concerns raised but it has not responded]
