Anti-Slavery International, a leading advocate for this legislation, views the Directive as a landmark achievement. However, despite its promise, critical gaps remain, including limitations in the scope and the burden of proof still being placed on claimants seeking justice. 

To assist civil society organisations (CSOs) and other allies, Anti-Slavery International has conducted an in-depth analysis of the Directive. This analysis explains the provisions in the final text, highlights the areas we advocated for, and points out remaining gaps and future advocacy needed to prevent corporate harm and ensure workers can fully exercise their rights under the Directive. It is intended to empower CSOs, whether inside or outside of the EU, to advocate for effective implementation and help shape the law’s ongoing evolution. Additionally, it is intended for CSOs to advocate to businesses about how they can follow best practice and ensure fair treatment for workers. 

Now is the time to work on the successful implementation of the Directive. 

Anti-Slavery International calls on:

• EU Member States to show bold leadership in addressing these gaps as they implement the Directive 
• The European Commission to work with CSOs to establish robust and practical measures when drafting guidance and best practice to accompany the Directive 
• The European Commission to consider strong amendments to the Directive as part of the official review process
