According to Bulgarian environmental activists, Karamanica mine operations cause local rivers pollution. They analysed water samples, and the results showed lead levels exceeding the limit 46 times. Additional research showed local water pollution with other heavy metals. This means that the groundwater body is also polluted. Taking into account these facts, the activists submitted a complaint to the Implementation Committee of the ESPOO Convention concerning Serbian failures to comply with the rules.

Environmentalists claim they have evidence that the Tlumino project caused devastating impact on water sources by drilling activities in search of gold. Water samples showed elevated levels of arsenic in the drinking water, which is almost 13 times over the limit.
