"日本の 建設業関連会社に対する アンケート結果報告" 21 June, 2022
[Japanese-to-English translation: Business & Human Rights Resource Centre ]
From July to September 2021, Human Rights Now, a Tokyo-based international human rights NGO, conducted a questionnaire survey of 10 Japanese general construction companies/developers (Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, Sumitomo Realty & Development, Taisei Corporation, Takenaka Corporation, Tokyu Fudosan Holdings, Nomura Real Estate Holdings, Mitsui Fudosan and Mitsubishi Estate) on human rights policies in construction and their their implementation including in supply chain. These ten companies include five companies that are called super general contractors (Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Shimizu Corporation, Taisei Corporation and Takenaka Corporation) [...], which are among the largest general construction companies in terms of company size and have sales of ¥1 trillion, and five general developers (Sumitomo Realty & Development, Tokyu Fudosan Holdings, Nomura Real Estate Holdings, Mitsui Fudosan and Mitsubishi Estate) [...] with sales of ¥500 billion and top sales ranking.
Through the responses to this questionnaire, it can be observed that the companies are aware of the need to address human rights issues, and there has been some progress in specific systems or efforts to implement corporate responsibility to respect human rights as stated in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights [...]. However, as will be explained in more detail below, there are still a number of points that are inadequate in comparison with international standards and need to be improved in order to meet the standards.
