Japan: Uber Eats Union alleges of ethnic discrimination as special permanent resident's delivery person account is suspended without explanation; no response by Uber Eats

According to Uber Eats Union, in June and September 2021, accounts of special permanent residents in Japan were suspended respectively without any explanation by Uber Eats Japan. In the first case, the way that Uber Eats Japan handled the account recovery was allegedly problematic, where the Union was denied for collective bargaining. In the second case, the special permanent holder was required to bring a resident certificate to the nearest compliance centre. However, the centres are only located in big cities, which are difficult for the driver in question to access.

In a press conference on 1 October, the Union urged Uber to stop suspending special permanent residents' accounts without any explanation, as those residents have no working restrictions and no obligation to show their resident certificates. Also, the Union asked for compensation for the loss of work during the suspension period. The Union Executive Committee Chairman describes responses from Uber as "ethnic discrimination."

The Union will continue asking for collective bargaining.
