On 15 July, 2021, prominent environmental activist Joannah Stutchbury has been shot dead near her home in Kenya amid her campaign against the development of wetlands in a national park. Stutchbury had vocally opposed attempts by powerful local businessmen to encroach and build on the nearby Kiambu forest, and had received multiple death threats in the past.
