New York farmworkers fear deportation amid escalating ICE raids

...

Since the president took office two weeks ago, there have been raids in cities including Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles and New York.

Reports of ICE agents in tactical gear making arrests have spread quickly.

"Terrified to go to work. Terrified to go grocery shopping. Afraid to have their children go to school. In turn, the children are fearful that their parents are going to be taken from them," said Witt. "It’s having a major impact on people’s wellbeing. And in turn, and I think many of us don’t realize this, it’s going to have a major impact on our local economies."

New York farms across the state employ undocumented migrants, and farmers say they wouldn't be able to survive without immigrant workers.

Because of fear of deportation, Reverend Witt said some migrants are skipping work and keeping their children home from school.
