" On March 19, 2024, Newmont was invited by the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre to address claims in the local media regarding alleged violations of human rights concerning air and water pollution, impacts on the ecosystem and health impacts on local communities linked to Newmont's Peñasquito mine in Mexico. We welcome the opportunity to provide a response to allegations in the media and are committed to being transparent about claims made against us.

In 2014 Newmont created a Global Water Strategy to help direct our efforts to improve operational performance by increasing recycling and reducing consumption and costs, while also mitigating impacts and fostering internal and external collaboration around water use. Our Peñasquito mine adheres to this strategy.

At Peñasquito, we created participatory water monitoring groups with five local communities (Mazapil, Enrique Estrada, Tecolotes, Mesas del Portezuelo and Matamoros) in collaboration with an independent NGO. These committees monitor water quality with the support of local citizens who are familiar with the area's natural resources. The government also participates in the monitoring program to measure and evaluate water quantity and quality and identify solutions to improve water availability. The monitoring is done quarterly, and the results are shared with the community. In addition, since 2020, Peñasquito has supported and delivered infrastructure and social and community development projects to benefit the Mazapil Municipality, where the community of Cedros is located. These projects include new water wells and a water treatment plant, which provides access to potable water for 80% of the Cedros community, benefiting approximately 2,300 people. The remaining 20% get their water supply delivered by truck.

In addition, the company sponsors voluntary community clean-up campaigns in Cedros and peripheral roads of the mine. In partnership with local authorities, the company has also constructed a medical clinic, a technical vocational education center, which includes housing for local students, and a professional baseball field. Peñasquito provides scholarships and implements supplier development programs that benefit more than 600 local students and 250 local vendors respectively.
