Norway becomes first country in the world to allow controversial deep sea mining despite concerns voiced by activists, scientists, fishers and investors

On January 9th 2024, the Norwegian parliament gave the green light for the government's plans to allow deep sea mining in the Arctic. The parliament voted in favour despite warnings from scientists about its potential devastating impact on marine life, and opposition from the EU, both of which have advocated for a temporary ban on deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns.
