S. Korea: Former WINIA employees demand payment of 40b Won in unpaid wages & severance pay

[Unofficial Korean-to-English translation provided by Business & Human Rights Resource Centre]

"WINIA Electronics, 40 billion in unpaid wages...Chairman Park Young-woo should take responsibility," 21 August 2023

[...] A press conference was organized to publicize the situation of unpaid wages at WINIA Electronics within Dayou WINIA Group and to publicly request the group chairman to take responsibility and pay the outstanding amount.

"Since the company known as Daewoo Electronics was acquired by Dayou WINIA Group, its sales have plummeted from 1.3 trillion won to 100 billion won in five years, and the number of employees has dropped from 1,000 to 150," said Mr. Kim Ji-eui, a former employee with unpaid wages.

[...] Mr. Min Byung-do, another former employee with unpaid wages, revealed his situation, saying, "Eight months after my retirement, I still haven't received both my unpaid wages and severance pay. Since I haven't received my severance pay, I can't pay back my temporary living expenses loan, so I'm in danger of losing my credit rating," he said.

"The situation of the current employees is no different," said Mr. Min, adding, "they're not getting paid even though they work for the company, and they can't do any other work because of the non-competition clause."
