Sainsbury's response to exploitation of undocumented, outsourced cleaners in stores
The Resource Centre invited Sainsbury's to respond to the following questions:
- Respond to the articles’ fndings;
- Disclose the steps it is taking to investigate and remediate the reported abuse; and,
- Disclose any human rights due diligence undertaken prior to contracting the cleaning companies and when monitoring conditions for subcontracted cleaners.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “At Sainsbury's we are committed to championing human rights throughout our business and supply chain. Our suppliers are expected to meet our robust human rights policies and are regularly assessed against these. Unfortunately, targeted criminality was involved in this specific situation so we welcome the investigation and conviction of those persons who perpetrated the crime. We no longer work with these companies in our supply chain.”
