Syria: Cos. organising guided tours to country deliver "inaccurate" image despite persistent poverty & displacement

The Guardian reported on tourism trends portraying Syria in positive light over ten years after the Syrian civil war despite unemployment, poverty, and thousands of Syrian continue to be displaced or detained.

The article mentioned how travel bloggers such as Xavier Raychell Blancharde of Travelling the Unknown and Joan Torres of Against the Compass, both of which are companies which organise tours to Syria, deliver an inaccurate normalised image of the country as being safe - which is being used by the government to their advantage.

“There are thousands of detainees in Assad’s prisons, poverty and unemployment. Whoever says that Syria is safe is a liar”
Fared al-Mahlool, an Idlib-based journalist and researcher

The Resource Centre reached out to Travelling the Unknown and Against the Compass. Working contact information of Travelling the Unknown could not be found. Against the Compass said they will provide a statement at a later date.
