USA: McDonald's workers protest extreme heat at work, following death of another worker, incl. co. comment
Workers at an East Los Angeles branch of McDonald's walked out on October 24 2023 as temperatures reached nearly 100 degrees in the kitchen. This followed the death of another worker, Bertha Montes, 45, earlier in the year. Montes was rushed to hospital shortly after returning home from her shift on April 13. Her family said that she had asked to leave work early but her manager refused. Montes died in hospital several weeks later.
Matthew Tulaphorn, the owner and operator of the East L.A. McDonald's, said he was deeply saddened when he heard about Montes' death. He promised management would investigate the allegations.
