In Guatemala, members of the Q'eqchi' indigenous communities were on the roadside for 21 days in a makeshift camp to protest against the operation of the Fénix mine, belonging to the Compañía Guatemalteca de Níquel (CGN), a subsidiary of the Russian and Swiss firm Solway Investment Group, but they have suffered repression by the security forces, with several injured, including women and children, with no specific number reported at the moment. The latest state offensive against the Q'eqchi' people organised in El Estor began last Friday 22 October, when the PNC and the army violently repressed the Q'eqchi population with tear gas. The peaceful protest at the entrance to the municipality was intended to prevent the passage of trucks loaded with the coal that the mine needs to operate, thus demanding compliance with the resolution of the Constitutional Court - CC, which orders the suspension of the mining company's operations and that they be included in the pre-consultation activities, also a resolution of the same CC. The Guatemalan government imposed a state of siege in the municipality in the northeast of the territory in order to mitigate clashes between security forces and the indigenous communities.
