UK: Sea Alliance incl. supermarkets in talks to launch pilot worker-driven social responsibility scheme to reduce migrant abuse on fishing vessels

Human Rights at Sea

After a year of coalition building, the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) and the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF)'s goal to launch a worker-driven social responsibility program, modelled on CIW's Fair Foood Program, is reportedly ready to launch by the end of 2023. Fishers in the UK, particularly a migrant workforce, have historically faced extremely difficult and dangerous working conditions, with little recourse to remedy or compensation.

Earlier this year, the Financial Times reported on working conditions for migrant fishers employed on "transit visas" to work on fishing boats out of Northern Ireland, finding found health and safety breaches, low wages and long hours for crews. The FT now reports major buyers and processors of seafood are in talks to launch a pilot scheme in North-East Scotland. The consumer groups include Tesco, Asda, Morrisons and Whitby Seafoods, which belong to the Seafood Ethics Action (Sea) Alliance.

In January 2024, the Financial Times reported the seafood sector had launched its two-year pilot worker-driven social responsibility scheme in Scotland. The scheme will be run by labour rights groups, Focus on Labour Exploitation, the International Transport Workers’ Federation, and the Fair Food Programme; and the consumer group, Seafood Ethics Action Alliance.

[The project gives migrant fisher] a chance for greater protection and improved conditions at work, as well as the ability to shape their own working conditions.
