The way forward: evidence and recommendations for benefit-sharing frameworks with local communities in the renewable energy sector from an African and global perspective

Parties at the last COP pledged to triple global renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade. Demand for key transition minerals to support the manufacturing of renewable energy technologies is growing exponentially. In a just energy transition, gaining and retaining public support for a fast roll-out of wind and solar energy projects depends on creating the conditions for real shared prosperity with local communities.

On the occasion of the launch of a new research briefing by BHRRC, focusing on benefit-sharing regulatory frameworks in the mining and renewable energy sectors in six African countries – Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zimbabwe and South Africa, this webinar will highlight key lessons learnt, evidence of emerging leadership in the global South, and recommendations for model legislation and meaningful benefit-sharing frameworks to drive shared prosperity.

This webinar will address the following key topics:

  • How is the discussion on benefit-sharing relevant to the human rights agenda in the context of a just energy transition?
  • What are the different forms of benefit-sharing mechanisms with communities in mining and renewable energy projects?
  • What are the drivers of success, risks and concerns from a community perspective?
  • What is the role of public regulation to support a more equitable share of benefits with communities?
  • Looking at co-ownership in particular: what are the potential barriers and what do we know of drivers of success?

  • Caroline Avan, Head of Natural Resources and Just Transition, BHRRC
