"Sar Kheng urges action on cross-border crimes", 24 February 2023

Minister of Interior Sar Kheng urged authorities to work together to suppress terrorism and all kinds of transnational crimes, including human trafficking in all forms and smuggling through illegal corridors and marine ports.

He issued the call at the ministry’s annual meeting held … to review its 2022 work results and direction for 2023.

He instructed the National Police forces, civil administration and prison department officials to carry out their duties responsibly…

“In particular, it is necessary to maintain national security by increasing cooperation via regional and international law enforcement frameworks. This will strengthen the professional capacity of law enforcement agencies,” he added.

He said authorities must increase their management of people and goods entering and exiting the country. They should also monitor the accommodation of foreign visitors to the Kingdom, while blocking all smuggling routes, whether overland or marine.

“Regular anti-trafficking operations should be carried out, and you must inspect the status of foreign employees. Crack down on illegal gambling and thoroughly investigate all forms of money laundering,” he said.

Am Sam Ath, deputy director of rights group LICADHO, supported the minister’s calls to step up measures against human trafficking, drug smuggling and money laundering, as it would improve the Kingdom’s image on the international stage.

“Authorities need to take several necessary measures, strengthen cooperation and enhance their capabilities. No officials should be allowed to involve themselves in human trafficking, drugs or other crimes, and they should cooperate more closely with other nations, both regionally and globally,” he said.
