Europe: Environmental conditions & job protection should be required for COVID-19 airline bailouts, say NGOs

Travel disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has meant many airlines in Europe are requiring government bailouts. Climate organisations have called for public bailouts to come with binding environmental conditions to address the sector’s contribution to climate change as well as strict conditions to protect jobs. While Austria and France have attached some conditions to bailouts for Austrian Airlines and KLM, others have received support with no requirements to reduce pollution.

On Earth Day 2020, Transport & Environment, Greenpeace and Carbon Market Watch launched a new airline bailout tracker to track government bailouts which have been made without binding environmental conditions.
