In April 2021, 60 US and Honduran organisations sent a letter to US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urging the US to oppose funding for the Jilamito Hydroelectric Project in Honduras. The letter points out the numerous overlaps between the Jilamito Hydroelectric Project and the Agua Zarca Hydroelectric Project, where Berta Cáceres was murdered for opposing it. In addition, the environmental and operating permits were granted without the consent of the communities, and the project is located within the buffer zone of the Texiguat Wildlife Reserve. The US justified support for projects like the Jilamito Hydroelectric Project on the grounds that such development will prevent migration. The US government withdrew funding for the project in June 2021, but claimed that the action is not connected to NGOs complaints. Advocates call on the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to look at the demands of the people who want to conserve the Jilamito River for community consumption, and not to fund the INGELSA company, where only one group profits.
