Futuro investigates reports two Mexican migrant workers experienced labour rights abuse while working at a farm in the USA. They were employed on the H-2A visa. They experienced extremely poor living conditions, and a lack of access to food. The worker was jointly employed by a labour contractor and the farm. The labour contractor also allegedly threatened the workers with immigration enforcement if they left their jobs harvesting blueberries. The employer also made the workers sign forms in English, falsely claiming he reimbursed them for their visa and travel expenses. The man who recruited them into the H-2A program in southern Mexico threatened one of the workers' wives back in Mexcico. Further, the article alleges the labor recruiter who promised to usher them through the process charged each $2,500. The workers were not paid the hourly minimum wage as promised by the recruiter: instead, they were paid a piece rate of $2.50 per bucket of harvested blueberries—regardless of the number of hours they worked. Further, due to the fact the harvest was not ready yet, often the workers would wait all day without picking anything - and therefore not be paid. The employer also threatened to confiscate the workers passports.

A Mexican migrant worker in the US employed as a farmer to work on a tobacco farm through he H-2A visa programme worked long hours (7am - 8.30pm), 7 days a week (until 2pm on Sundays). He was also sprayed with pesticide in the eyes by colleagues which left him with blurred vision. The worker took out a loan to cover his visa and travel expenses, leaving him in 'debt for about $1,000' upon arrival.

A Florida labour contractor had two invoices from the State Department’s visa appointment service showing he paid $9,500 to cover the cost of 50 H-2A workers’ visas. However, it was found that the labor contractor was engaging in cost shifting. He had the workers pay out of pocket for the visa fees by wiring the money to his company in Mexico.
