Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers across Europe at heightened risk of abuse & exploitation during second harvest season amid COVID-19
For the second year in a row, farmers are facing up to a harvest season in the coronavirus pandemic. Fruit and vegetable harvests are underway in western Europe with seasonal workers gathering crops in countries like Italy, Portugal, Germany and Britain. COVID-19 has heightened the risks for many agricultural workers, who are often forced into poor living conditions, where health and hygiene measures are not respected. Moreover, as checks have decreased, many see their working conditions deteriorated and are subject to exploitation, including sexual abuse and violence.
