Lidl responded

We are deeply sorry for the dramatic incident in the course of which Adil Belakhdim lost his life and we want first of all to express our most sincere and profound condolences to his family in this sad moment. The accident, which occurred near our logistics center in Biandrate (NO) involved a vehicle and a driver from a third party supplier of goods, unrelated to Lidl. The national demonstration in which the Si Cobas member was participating was called for claims in the logistics sector. In this context, Lidl recalls that it does not apply the logistic contract to all its 2,500 employees in the 10 logistic platforms in Italy, whereas the national contract for retailers, together with an additional supplementary agreement. Lidl emphasizes that constant relations have always been in place with the main trade unions, oriented towards dialogue and mutual confrontation.

By principle, Lidl is aware of its responsibility regarding the respect of human rights and strives to respect, promote and protect human rights at every stage along its global supply chains, taking its duty for due diligence very seriously. The company’s approach is based upon internationally recognized standards and guidelines, among which the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. In regard of working conditions one of the core principles that must be respected in fact is the right of all employees to establish employee representative bodies and to conduct collective bargaining governing working conditions. The policy of Lidl regarding the respect of human rights is defined in the “Human Rights Policy Statement” of the Schwarz Group and finds application through the company’s Code of Conduct, which is signed with Lidl business partners.
