Malta: 200 South East Asian workers allegedly charged thousands of euros for jobs but left unpaid then dismissed; incl. co. comment

In December 2023 the Times of Malta revealed Maltese recruitment company Trebee, a medical supplier and temping agency, was accused of charging fees to nearly 200 non-EU nationals from South East Asia for job placements. Trebee received money through foreign agencies who paid recruitment company Mulberry Projects, which is owned by Trebee's administrator.

Workers were not paid for sporadic jobs once employed and were then sacked soon after receiving residence documentation. Mulberry Projects allegedly received over EUR130k from overseas employment agencies. Identity Malta reportedly issued approval-in-principle letters to workers after workers paid an initial installment to start the work permit process. Many workers told Times of Malta they had come to Malta through an agency in India called Abroad Study Plan.

Times of Malta received comments from Trebee's administrator, who owns Mulberry Projects, denying all wrongdoing. We could not identify contact information for Abroad Study Plan to invite the agency to respond to the allegations.
