Mexico: Opposition leader to Penmont mining company and his wife murdered; names of 13 activists left on bodies; includes company comments
José de Jesús Robledo Cruz, former president of the ejidal commissariat of the El Bajío ejido in Caborca, Sonora, and his wife were found dead in the middle of the desert. Robledo Cruz was president of the commissariat from August 2012 to September 2013, the height of the ejidatarios' resistance against the activities of the Penmont mining company in the region. Alongside the bodies, a card with the names of 13 other anti-mining activists was found. Some of these activists are in prison. Others are missing. We invited Penmont to comment on what happened. The company replied and sent us a press release on the matter.
