Panellists at seminar on forced labour and labour exploitation in the salmon industry
Sources
Organisations have held a seminar to present their research on the working conditions of divers in salmon farming in southern Chile. The presentation will be followed by a panel of experts, composed of representatives of the Divers Union ‘Hijos del Rigor’, the NGO Ecocéanos, the NGO Observatorio Ciudadano and former representative of the Sustainable Oceans project, and the Human Rights Centre of the Diego Portales University (UDP), who have worked in defence of the rights of salmon workers and divers, denouncing abusive practices and/or have investigated the sector in its level of compliance with the standard of protection and respect for human rights by the State and the companies.
The organisations affirm that workers and lawyers from AquaChile, SalmonChile and the Salmon Council who attended the seminar interrupted the presentation and ‘intimidated the speaker and the panellists, trying to prevent the delivery of the results of the investigation, disqualifying the speakers and generating an atmosphere of insecurity and fear among the attendees’.
