Tesco response to Oxfam's analysis of supermarket HRIAs and commitments

At Tesco we are committed to respecting and advancing human rights in line with UN guiding principles by identifying, preventing, and mitigating human rights risks and issues in our own operations and throughout our supply chains.

As part of that commitment, we are continually exploring ways to strengthen our due diligence processes, including the use of Human Rights Impact Assessments (HRIAs). In 2019, we initiated our first HRIA in the Vietnamese Prawn supply chain. Results of this assessment can be found here

Building on this experience, we remain committed to conducting HRIAs where they can bring about the most value and welcome the recommendations made by OXFAM in their recent report on working towards meaningful HRIAs.

We also agree with their position that HRIAs should lead to impactful change. We are exploring how HRIAs can be utilised to truly deliver the most value. As part of any new HRIA, we will always look to engage workers, community organisations and key stakeholders as part of the process. We also believe the development of robust action plans and identifying the specific roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders is a key step in our risk mitigation process.
