The construction and operation of IWIP and upstream nickel mining caused massive deforestation on the Ake Doma river upstream; which relied by Lelilef villager as clean water sources. According to Felix Naik (65), Lelilef villager; in rainy season, water from the river turned into dark brown and muddy, after mining site was fully operated. Allegedly, it was mixed with soil sedimentation that contains heavy metal pollution from mining operation. The nickel industry’s destruction of forests, acquisition of farmland, degradation of freshwater resources, and harm to fisheries has made it difficult, if not impossible, to continue their traditional ways of life.

Residents in villages near IWIP also fear that newly developed health problems, including respiratory and skin problems, are related to pollution from the construction and operation of IWIP and its coal power plants. Although the public health studies needed to directly attribute the reported health problems to industrial nickel activities at IWIP are lacking, the types of health impacts reported are in line with what studies suggest may be expected with exposure to pollution from industrial sources and coal plants.

Numerous indigenous peoples in several villages, said that they were not told the purpose of land acquisition or any other details of the project by any nickel mining or smelting companies, and thus were not able to give their full Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. Some of the villagers with legal certificate on their properties even lost their land rights without proper compensation since developers/contractors illegally cut down trees, and destroyed fishing ponds in private properties.

On one occasion, police visited his house at 2 a.m. to demand that he sign a letter that said he would stop obstructing the sale of his land to IWIP, which he refused to sign.
This happened after Jeffry protested by building a bamboo barricade to stop developer activities, which illegally enter Jeffry property and cut down trees on his land. Company refused to recognize Jeffry ownership of the land.
