Court delays case against Newmont [Indonesia]

An Indonesian court on Tuesday postponed hearing the government's $133.6 million lawsuit against Newmont Mining Corp. for a month, which gives both sides some time to negotiate a settlement..The multimillion-dollar lawsuit stems from allegations that Newmont's Minahasa gold mine on Sulawesi Island polluted Buyat Bay, sickening villagers and making fish unsafe to eat...Denver-based Newmont, the world's biggest gold producer, has denied the allegations. It has pointed to some independent studies that have found no connection between the Buyat Bay villagers' health and mining waste...Doug Hock, a Newmont spokesman in Denver, said: "We are very optimistic we can reach an out-of-court settlement..."
