Villagers protest Rio Tinto’s Bunder project [India]

The Rio Tinto Bunder diamond project faced…protests…by villagers, during a public hearing held by district collector Masood Akhtar, reports say. The Bunder project is located at Kasera village in Bundelkhand region of the state of Madhya Pradesh….The villagers oppose the project fearing it will create large-scale environmental destruction and affect the local tribal population, reports say….some…favoured the project citing it as an employment opportunity in the area…the company officials noted that the project would be undertaken within the ‘laws of the land’…The project has been since some time facing oppositions, from political and NGO fronts, who fear it is not viable both for the environment and the population of the area.
