India: Rape in Uber cab raises questions about company's recruitment practices, Uber apologises

A female executive reported a rape to police by an Uber driver during a trip from Vasant Vihar in south Delhi to her home in north Delhi on the evening of December 5, 2014. The implicated Uber driver admits having sexually assaulted several women including the one who made the complaint. The case exposes regulatory, security gaps - online & offline. Police stated that GPS was not installed in the vehicle and the driver had not been vetted.  Uber has apologised, and the driver is in judicial custody. Uber says it is currently running a 'full audit' of driver screening after 7 rapes and commits to putting a more stringent system in place.
