Ahafo mine cyanide spill prompts NGOs to question Intl. Cyanide Code validity [Ghana]

Newmont Mining is refuting a news release by two NGOs claiming the mining company has been "fined millions for a cyanide spill" at the Ahafo gold mine... Environmental NGOs EARTHWORKS and the Wassa Association of Communities Affect by Mining (WACAM) said a Ghanaian Ministerial Panel recommended Newmont be fined US$4.9 million "for failing to prevent the spill or to properly report on and investigate the spill." Newmont said it has "already implemented a number of corrective measures to prevent any future process solution releases." The NGOs said a report by the ministerial panel "faulted Newmont on several counts..."
